Rated for an outstanding performance in 2018, Plan International Liberia is continuing national efforts to treat and prevent Malaria, working with health partners and other stakeholders.
The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria has expressed explicit confidence in Plan International Liberia, thereby rating the organization with “Grade A-1” which signifies its excellent work.
The Liberia Coordinating Mechanism (LCM) which is a national multi-sectorial body that is responsible for coordinating and overseeing Global Fund resources in Liberia made the disclosure on Monday, August 14, 2018 through its chairman Cllr. Tiawan S. Gongloe during the opening of a grant implementation start-up workshop organized by Plan International Liberia for national stakeholders.
The workshop brought together about 100 representatives of the government of Liberia, United Nations Agencies in Liberia, and health actors including Plan County Coordinators, County Health Officers, County Health Supervisors, Community Health Assistants, and Religious and Traditional Leaders from Montserrado, Bomi, Nimba, Lofa, and Margibi counties to get full understanding of grant implementation, given that the Grant is performance based.
Cllr. Gongloe said the approved grant is intended to scale up malaria prevention, control and treatment throughout the length and breadth of Liberia.
He noted that the Global Fund has allocated a little over US$36 million for Malaria interventions in Liberia and the grant is for a period of three years. Its implementation began on July 1, 2018, and is expected to end on June 30, 2021.
According to the LCM Chairman, about US$12.9 Million of the approved grant is allocated to programs being implemented by Plan International Liberia. Plan International Liberia, under this arrangement, will do community interventions aimed at reducing deaths caused by malaria.
“Having successfully implemented the former grant which ended June 30, 2018 with an A-1 rating, we have no doubt that this new grant will be implemented with the highest degree of efficiency by Plan International Liberia in our collective efforts to reduce malaria deaths in Liberia by 50% by the year 2020,” Cllr. Gongloe expressed.
In a remark, Plan International Liberia, through its Country Director, Madam Evelyn Moorehead extended thanks and appreciation to the Global Fund. She vowed that Plan will continue to work in compliance with the Global Fund grant agreement to help reduce illnesses and deaths associated with malaria in Liberia, especially for children under ages 5.
“We are grateful to have received such an honor from the Global Fund, as communicated by the LCM. This honor, we believed, is meant to motivate us and other organizations working with the Global Fund to increase efforts in meeting the Fund targets,” Madam Moorehead noted.
